Your cruise on board the “Fortuna” can begin in Trapani, and sail straight away to Favignana “the large butterfly on the sea”, as the painter Salvatore Fiume described it. Leaving behind the crystalline sea and golden beaches of Cala Azzurra, or the thousand shades of blue of Cala Rossa, your captain will set sail towards Palermo where you can spend the first night, visiting the city’s beautiful sites, including the Cathedral and Norman Palace, the markets and try the excellent wine and food, such as the cannoli and arancini.
From Palermo sail towards Filicudi, famous for its water ices and typical local breed of donkeys, with only about 100 inhabitants in all. The same day you can sail to Alicudi, which does not have a port but there are buoys for the boats to use. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the island has some lovely pebbly beaches. You can make some wonderful trips on board your chartered yacht, sailing around the sea and even go snorkelling. The Grotta del Bue Marino is well worth visiting.
In the morning set off for Salina, formed from two extinct volcanic cones now covered with woods and vines, making this the greenest of the Aeolian Islands. The rocky coastline has a series of bays that are easy to reach, to spend a relaxing day on the sea on board your chartered yacht. Disembark at Lingua to try the local water ices, and go shopping in the typical stores for the local Malvasia wine and capers. If you are lucky, and in low season, you can spend a quiet night in the port and fill up with fuel and water.
Spend a tranquil day sunbathing on board the “Fortuna” while you sail towards Lipari, the largest island in the archipelago and the most inhabited. Inland the island is barren and mountainous, while the coastline is broken up with some beautiful beaches. Visits are well worth making to the Acropolis, the Archaeological Park and the Archaeological Museum, and you must try the typical almond cakes. There are some breath-taking landscapes, like the obsidian flows in Canneto, or the dazzling pumice caves that turn the sea turquoise. Lipari has several anchoring points and shelters, so why not spend an evening on land and anchor in the roadstead at Sottomonastero or Marina Corta.
Another day go to the barren Vulcano island, the most southern in the archipelago and separated from Lipari by a sea channel only 1.6 km wide, and just 12 knots from the northern coast of Sicily. The island is formed by a series of volcanoes: Mount Aria, Vulcanello and Gran Cratere, the only one still active. The only safe bays on the island are Porto Ponente and Porto Levante, where you can reach the Pozza dei Fanghi, a natural spa pool where you can spread the regenerating island muds on your skin.
Dedicate a day to Panarea, the immortal trendy island that attracts the young and VIPs and is also known as the Capri of the Aeolian Islands. It is the smallest island in the archipelago and the most picturesque. The largest town is San Pietro with its exclusive designer boutiques, restaurants and lively nightlife. On Panarea you should visit the prehistoric village near Punta Milazzese, Punta Peppemaria, a promontory with the spa springs nearby, the island of Basiluzzo and the Lisca Bianca cliffs, where there is a beautiful beach surrounded by rock. The seabeds and islands are ideal for snorkelling. In late evening depart for Stromboli, to admire the fascinating lava flow – the “fire scoria” from the sea on board the “Fortuna”.
The last island you will reach in the archipelago is Stromboli, with the small island of Strombolicchio. The Romans called it the “Mediterranean lighthouse”, and its volcano (the highest in Europe) is still active and can be seen from many miles away. The beaches are of dark fine lava sand. Stromboli is silent and calm, and like nearly all the Aeolian islands does not have a port. Ginostra is worth seeing, the smallest port in the world on the southwest coast of Stromboli.
